While you are out and about enjoying the warm weather, remember to practice summer heat safety. Prolonged exposure to the sun can result in heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn, and heat stroke. Check out these tips for beating the heat and staying safe during summer activities:

  • Avoid having practicing in the middle of the day- practice in the mornings or afternoons to avoid the sun at its peak.
  • Stay well hydrated- drink water before, during, and after physical activity, especially if you are exposed to the heat. And don’t forget to remind your teammates to stay hydrated!
  • Use proper equipment - keep safe by using the correct equipment for your sport, (Helmet, pads, life jacket, etc.)
  • Use sunscreen- Sunscreen helps to protect the skin from UV rays connected to skin cancer. Always use sunscreen when you are outside, even if not directly in the sun. And don’t forget to reapply every 30 minutes!
  • Learn symptoms of concussion and heat related illnesses- keep an eye out for teammates, friends and children who are participating in summer sports by learning warning signs and what to do if either occurs.
  • Pace yourself- know your limits, and do not try to push yourself. Stop physical activity if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, muscle cramps, or develop a headache. The sun can play tricks and these are signs that you need to slow it down!
