Zika: The Basics of the Virus and How to Protect Against It

Zika outbreaks are currently happening in many countries and territories. While the mid-Atlantic is not currently experiencing any locally-acquired mosquito-borne cases, all of Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey are in the native range of mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus. Additionally, Zika may be spread through any sexual contact with an infected person even if the person does not have symptoms at the time. Zika can also be spread from a pregnant woman to her fetus. It is important to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and be aware of the risk of transmission through sexual and in utero contact.
