When the temperature drops outside, the humidity often drops inside, too. Dry air may lead to dry skin or respiratory symptoms. Using a humidifier in your home may help combat winter dryness. However, not keeping humidifiers properly cleaned may result in unwanted illnesses, including flu-like symptoms, and spread bacteria and mold throughout your house.

Check out these tips to help ensure humidity is the only thing being spread by your humidifier.

  • Clean tank thoroughly before putting your humidifier away for the season.
  • Clean tank thoroughly before using it for the first time each season.
  • Deep clean tank at least once a week.
  • Change and thoroughly rinse the water in the tank daily.

It’s important to keep in mind that cleaning recommendations can vary depending on the type of humidifier you have and other environmental factors, such as whether you have pets. We recommend reviewing and following the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning. In general, you should clean all plastic components with white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or a diluted bleach solution and use a soft-bristled brush to clear away any stuck-on residue.

With minimal effort, you can keep your humidifier clean and your home healthy!
