For seniors, a fall may lead to a serious, life-threatening injury. As we grow older, our bodies weaken and old age may result in a higher risk of being injured from falling. According to the CDC, 1 out of every 5 falls may lead to a serious injury such as a broken bone or head injury. Conditions that may put you at a higher risk of injury include:

  • Lower body weakness
  • Vitamin D Deficiency
  • Use of medications that may cause drowsiness such as tranquilizers
  • Vision problems
  • Poor footwear
  • Home hazards such as loose carpeting or uneven stairs.

Most falls are a result of a combination of these risk factors. Check out these tips to help you prevent slips and falls in your home.

  • Remove clutter- Remove clutter to create a clear walking path in every room. This will prevent you from accidentally stepping on something that could cause you to fall.
  • Use non-slip items- Use items such as slip-proof bath mats in the shower, as well as on the bathroom floor. Wet floors can be slippery and may lead to serious injury from falls.
  • Secure loose carpeting- Make sure there are no wrinkles in rugs that may catch your foot. Also, secure any carpet that has come loose that may be hazardous.
  • Improve lighting- Be sure each room has a good source of light both during the day and during night time. Dimly lit rooms make it difficult to see where you are going and could result in an unsafe fall.
  • Use hand rails- Install and use handrails on all staircases to prevent falls. Steps are often the most dangerous part of the house for the elderly.
