Starting in 2024, many health insurers will no longer cover many routine physical examinations.
This may include:
- • School Physicals
- • Pre-Employment Physicals
- • Driver’s License Physicals
- • Sports and Camp Physicals
- • Life and Disability Insurance Physical
For example, Cigna Healthcare no longer covers the above physicals effective August 17, 2024.
Patient First will notify you during registration if your insurance does not cover the cost of a physical exam at Patient First. You may also wish to check with your insurer before your visit to determine whether a physical exam is covered when it is performed at Patient First.
What this means for patients with commercial insurance:
If your insurance does not cover the cost of a physical exam when it is performed by a Patient First physician or advanced practice provider and you want to have your exam at Patient First, you will be responsible for payment of all charges. Your exam may be covered when performed by another health care provider.
Affected patients with commercial insurance coverage have two options:
Option 1: Self-Pay Program
You may pay out of pocket for a physical exam at Patient First’s discounted self-pay program rates. (Not available to patients with government health insurance, such as Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, or Tricare.)
Discounted Rates: Sports and camp physicals: $55 School physicals: $55 (in MD, NJ, PA) | $96 (in VA) All other physicals: $145
Additional Services: If your provider recommends extra services, you may be responsible for the cost of those as well.
Option 2: Check with Your Insurer
Contact Your Insurer: Call the number on your insurance card to see if your exam is covered and/or contracted to be performed by another provider.
What this means for patients with government health insurance
(Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, or Tricare.)
If your insurance does not cover the cost of a physical exam when it is performed at Patient First, it may be covered when performed by another health care provider. Patient First is not able to provide non-covered services on self-pay basis to patients with government insurance.
